I was so sure that l was not going to do postcard art as my excuse was that l only work on big wall hangings and couldn't work small but l got the bug in the end and made this collection and thought l would just make another three.
Then l was sorting out my sheers and chiffon yesterday in a box on the top shelf and underneath the sheers there was' 20 ' fabric postcards started and backed, l cannot remember starting any, if l had l would have never cut some of my favorite hand deyed fabric up to go on the next three l was making.
So l have cought the postcard bug or its cought me.

New Ebay Shop

Am doing well the last few weeks, opened a new group and have also opened a new ebay shop.
The reason why, was l just could not get my new Babylock Embellisher to go with my textile work and l tried lots of different ways so sold it to a friend but was left with a big box of silk tops, roving ect there was no way l could use it up so put it cheaper and a lady has started by buying a rainbow silk tops, with me loving colour l had bought some real pretty ones so anyone intrested have a look.
The shop is called 'Jill Smith Arts' l am also going to start selling rubber stamps and if it works out will be selling small packs of different things in for experimenting with or for workshops so it will save people buying large amounts of things.

NEW GROUP
I said when l gave my other group after four years l would never start another as it took four years of my life but !!!!!!
I looked all over for groups on textile and fabric arts but counldn't find any, most of the good ones are not on yahoo's public list so its not easy to find one other than the sewing machines that do the work for you or cross stitch and paper arts , so if you are a bit further on and have done courses there doesn't seem to be anything.
So my new group is called 'All things fabric' which covers a lot and we have a lot of nice friendly and helpfull members.
I am doing some small workshops on subjects we are chattering about so am hoping this group will fill the void.
So if anyone wants to join and the link at the top will not work , just leave me a message and l will get back to you.

How to make a esy tote bag

Easy Tote Bag.
You need the following;
A piece of hessianor something firm the size of your bag, but the size has to be a double
length as there is no seam in the bottom. Felt is ok to use as long as its
firm felt.
A strong piece of fabric for the lining, same size as hessian.
Braid or a woven strip for handle.
Lots and lots of yarns, cords, ropes, anything thats chunky that you can
couch on to the hessian..
Piping wide or strong tape or braid.
How to do it;
First turn over a small hem at top and bottom of the hessian and hem stitch
down.
Now sort all your cords, yarns, ect in rows of your own colour choice and
starting from one end of your hessian with a chunky cord or braid, couch it
down in a straight row. Now carry on down your fabric strip doing exactly the
same with no gaps .
When you have done this part, measure the length of the handle you want and
hem it to the wrong side at the top and bottom. Its a good idea to go over
this with a machine as if you are going to put a lot in the bag , the handle
needs to well attached.
Now get your lining fabric and tack it to the wrong side of the hessian, then
go round it with the machine but use strong thread, button or quilters
thread.
Now turn your bag inside out and hand stich some tape or wide piping up the
side seams to cover your stitching up.
And thats your bag all done, if you want to make it glitzy sew some beads
that tone with your colours.

I still cannot believe in my hot flat these beautiful lilys are still going strong after fter ten days, as normally five days is max, took the stamens out as they are poisen to cats so don't want to gt Abie ill.
I was a florist years ago and had a shop selling dried , silk and fresh flowers and since have seen the high prices on these lilys so have not bought them but lasting this long its worth the price and the smell is fantastic. There a bit different than ones l have seen as they have like whiskers.

My messy full Studio

This started because l had orderd some art stuff then found some right in front of me on a shelf in my small studio, why is this as am sure there is a little elve hiding things as it happens so often. Now l am looking for my hand needle tool as have the embelisher but also need the hand one for fine details.
One thing l must tell you all is buy Maggie Grey's book on using the embelisher, its fantastic, will get a picture in today if l can. But l was going to sell mine till l read the book and there is so many ideas to try that yesteday l ordred a lot of merina wool tops and silk ones and went in the studio and found a lot more ###. Some of the pale silk and merina in peaches and pinks and lilacs l am going to sell on ebay. I have a bright red website and l love how Michelle has done it but you have to think about colours of art work against it.
As soon as l get some done will put them on here.

I got a email of one of my students today and its really made me feel so happy as most keep doing there textile art but don't tell me about it, so l am so pleased that this lady isthrilled about it, you never know l might be ableto post some pictures. Hi Jill, I hope you are well.I have been having a great deal of fun with the free hand machine embroidery i love the different results with different threads and materials. I have also really enjoyed the transfer dyes the results are brilliant not at all like the look when first painted. I have used velvets and polyester cotton but also vilene and the all look great. I am dead impressed with how clear the detail of the painting is I went back and made some more beads from the material dyed. I am still working on using metals and foils when I can pull myself away from fme and transferring!!!

If anyone else has this problem of nearly pulling your hair out because every time you sign i n you have to set a new password up, last night l set up another, twelve hours later it would not work then my brain woke up and realised l couldn't remember when was the last time l cleared my temporary files out, so went and cleared tem and first time signing in I WAS IN MY BLOG so try that as it works.

Easy Way of Dyeing
While l couldn't get into my blog l have been working out an easy way of dyeing, l wanted some dyed fabric so tried about three ways, l worked out a recipt for, sounds more like food but couldn't think of another word.
So this is the one that was a winner,
This is to make dye for two mtrs of fabric so any more or less you will have to alter it.
One teaspoon of dye powder (l use a big teaspoon )
3 tablespoons of washing soda
Six tablespoons of salt and l used table salt but any salt works with this.
Two mtrs of pre washed cotton fabric, l cut mine up into pieces but you can just lay it in without cutting but you may get lines where its folded.
Rubber gloves and a cat litter tray

Measure how much water you need to cover the fabric your dyeing then take it out into a container.
Mix dye powder, soda and salt together in a container with a small amount of warm water, then add it to the water you set aside and mix it all up till all the powder has gone.Now put your fabric into the water and leave for 50 minutes, if you want a deeper shade leave it overnight.
When the time is up hand rinse with warm water and l then put it in the washer for a short spin.
Then just hang it up to dry and when its dried iron the fabric with some parchment paper or a teflon pressing sheet over it on a hot setting and there you are , all done.

Well summer is back, blue skies and its hot so everything that l was doing has been cancelled and other than hang washing out am going to grab the sun while l can, just hope we have a month of it to make up for the wet august we had. Hope everybody else has got the same weather in the UK.

A New Four Part Course

I was saying in the last post that l was going to teach a new exciting five part course, well this is the outline of it and if you want to know more just email me, also if you want to know about any of the other classes let me know and l will send you the list.
You will be learning layering, slashing, burning with a soldering iron making texture in fabric, lots of dyeing and colouring in different ways.

Colour your life,
1) Part one will be four ways of colouring fabric, using dyes, crayons and more.
2) Part two is the class were you will learn how to bond fabrics plus burning and layering.
3) Part three will be , mixed media stitching, and altering the surface in three ways and making marks with hand stitching.
4) Using different soluble fabrics, making a sculpture, fabric out of scraps and slashing .
Thse are all up todate new ideas and are great fun to do but they also give you ideas that are exciting and will bring your work up the next level .

Day of day's

Have you had a day that nothing gone right well l had one today, even when l was having a break sitting outside the rain decided to come down in bathfulls and soaked me through but the best was and still is driving me mad. I had a big bean bag that had gone all floppy so thought if l washed it on a high heat it would shrink so it was firmer, well that was the idea but l should have stopped when l found the zip was inside out but l carried on pulling the bag that containd trillions of white balls and everything was going ok but then it got a bit harder so l gave a huge pull and that was the time l found out that the trillions had not been joined up at the bottom so these flipping trillions of white balls went all over me, the cat and the living room and hall, am still finding them but got 5 hoover container fulls and more. But you didn't dare breathe near them as they would jump away and how they got under the rug l will never know, got to go as have just seen some more lurking under the air con machine that never worked ,well, should have sent it to Nickie in Big Brother as she spend all her time haveing tantrums and behaving like a two year old all because of the air con, will take two year old back as my grandaughter aged just over one year old behaves better, had to wear ear plugs when she was on.

Last night l was thinking about the altererd books that were done in colours a few years ago, they were done by each person in a colour that was the same all through but in diferent strength's, if it was red it would have all the reds and pinks as well.

BUT I WOULD LOVE SOME MIXED MEDIA ARTISTS TO JOIN ME IN MAKING A POSTARD BOOK BUT WORKING IN TWO COLOURS.

Intrested yet, well this is how it would work, if l got the colours red and blue l would do six postards in the two colours and to make them into a book form to swap we would have two long pieces of flat ribbon stuck onto the back of the p/cards then another blank postcard over it to cover the ribbons and to either put more things on or leave a message there. If the ribbon was not to tight it would fold like a concertenia or it could drop down and be hung on the wall.
Plase say some of you would join, l think 6 people would work best then if its good another six could do one next.

A bit of shiborie to brighten the day up, this design l love and its easy to do, l draw on paper some wiggly lines, l think of rivers and then tack them and pull up tight and dye it withProcien dyes.

We were all saying how hot it was in the UK last week and it was so humid but today and the weekend was so gloomy so here is some colour for you. I would love to know what textile /mixed edia artist's and anyone working in art what there special colours are , my birthstone is a diamond and as its got no colour l have to say l don't like them to look at yet l love the rings l were , mixed jems in lots of colour's and not one is over thirty five pounds , so do you make your art ever in your birth stone colour and is your home and the clothe's the same. Another thing why do all the fashon experts tell us when we are over a certain age black is the colour we must wear, why should we, l have got brighter as l get older has anyone else ????

My Lincoln

I live a hour away from Lincoln on a train and go nearly every week as l love it, they haven't made it look modern like most city's are now and for the brave you can walk up a hill with grab rails at the side as its very very steep but as you go past old shops still selling things and then you come to the best of Lincoln, the 'Cathedral' that stands high up in the centre, and coming home in the dusk its all lit up and it looks just fantastic and it sparkles for miles.
But down below its just as special as you go through the High Street there is a bridge in the middle where beautifull white swans are swiming below and long boats also go through.
On the other side of the Road is a tea room just the same as it was years and years ago, its black and white and low cielings and beams and its like stepping back in time as you get the chins cups and lace tablecloths.

Its a beautifull sunny bright day here, these sunny bright days always make my muse wake up to do some more art.
I can never work when it is dark and horrible, any more artists outthere that are the same. Have been missing as l have had to do a big commision for Starbucks, l did a wall hanging to go on a deep blue wall so its been all go but exciting, even to dilvering it when we all had to leave the train and l was brought home in a taxi £47 thanks Lincoln Railway for helping and paying.
